Darrell:

Is there some way you can post the images of your examples here?

Your links don't work for someone who isn't registered and logged in on the British Medal Forum. Achieving that status is not at all easy or quick, it seems: I have registered, but am now in my third day of waiting for a Forum Administrator to approve and activate me ..... :(

I could do that.
I just need a bit of time.

Sorry for the dark pictures. The naming is extremely hard to reveal with the dark patina.

Has anyone got a copy of the Canada General Service Medal Roll 1866-1870.

I had a copy some years ago, got the details that I needed for my research and then sold the book on.

Details have now been eaten by our new puppy! :x Grrrrrrr.

I can still read some details of the two Neale's that were in the 1st Batt. Rifle Brigade page 45/48.......but the rest of the information relating to the other Neale family members are well and truely shredded.

So if someone has the odd copy, is there any chance of a look up please?

I would be interested an any of the other Neale family members that appear in the above mentioned book.

If at all possible a scan of those pages would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Steve,
Sorry for the late reply,

Many thanks for the pictures and links of naming......difficult when medals were issued and named so long after the campaign.

Thank you for the help, nice to have a reply. :D

All the best to you and the land of Oz.

Hello! I have a Canada General Service Medal and I have to admit that I am somewhat out of my field with it! It has 2 Fenian Raid clasps for the 1866 and the 1870 Raids and is edge marked to a Private Donald Lothian of the 18th Prescott Battalion. He was, apparently, a Quarter Master in the Prescotts. It also features a silver bar clasp pin to suspend it from the uniform which is also engraved "Donald Lothian". I have been told, that medals from the Prescotts are fairly scarce and quite collectable, but that is about all that I can find on them or this medal. I guess what i need to know is, are these double bar Fenian medals rare? I have no clue as to value but everyone I've managed to find with a double clasp has a radically different price/value on it. The values seem to be all over the place and I'm wondering if I am missing some reason. Also, the medal is Very heavily tarnished-black in areas-would it be good or bad to dip it?

Hello Wagriff, Two clasp CGSM's are rarer then a single clasp medal. He is confirmed on the roll as one of 245 men to the 18th Battalion that was awarded the medal of which 29 recieved both clasps.

As for the tarnish removal you will find collectors in both camps some who say clean and others that say leave. It is a personal choice however if you do decide to clean please make sure you use correct items not steel wool !!!!
