Breaker wrote:[b]Another interesting story of the British Army presence is that of Pte. Timothy O'Hea, who received the only Victoria Cross ever awarded in Canada. More details here: [/http://warwriting.blogspot.com/2005/08/only-victoria-cross-awarded-in-canada.html]

Great review of Elizabeth Reid's book by Sidney Allinson for whom I have a great respect. I found the book well written with most interesting ideas. Unfortunately, despite the intriguing speculation Elizabeth provided no evidence to support her theories and regrettably nothing seems to have surfaced since its publication.

There was one John Callaghan in the North West Rebellion, serving in the Montreal Garrison Artillery.

If you note the NWMP service record of your John Callaghan, it shows 6 years service in Artillery and 8 months service in the Royal Rifles(Can or Eng??) and a previous address in Montreal. Actually on page 6 occupation shows 6 years Rifle Brigade and previous service shows similar but it looks like artillery is written in.

Search the medal registry here:

There are nominal rolls of the North West Rebellion on the internet in publications. I nabbed my 5300 name list from a PDF of Boulton's book which has a roll as an appendix. It took a few days of editing to fix scanning errors and I've added people from missed units as I find them.

The British regulars "pulled pole" in 1870 and left Canada except for garrisons at the Imperial bases at Halifax, Nova Scotia and Esquimalt [Victoria], British Columbia. As you pointed out, any officers serving in Canada would have been in staff positions. I am surprised that Middleton had 17 British staff officers with him. I thought that the number was much smaller.

Actually, those involved in the Red River Expedition did not leave until 1871.

All the best,
